Pride and Prejudice – Jane Austen Chapter 1 Narration

Read Time 2 mins

I haven’t read a billion of the classics. Probably the only way I would read a book like Pride and Prejudice is this way; narrating it to share with you. Something new. Somewhat of a distraction. We are both in this together. Lets see what we think ….

‘Chapter One of “Pride and Prejudice” introduces us to the Bennet family, who live in the village of Longbourn. The Bennets consist of Mr. Bennet, Mrs. Bennet, and their five daughters: Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Kitty, and Lydia.

The chapter begins with a famous opening sentence: “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of

a wife.”

Mr. Bennet is a sarcastic and witty man, while his wife, Mrs. Bennet, is rather excitable and eager to marry off her daughters. Her primary goal is to see them all well-married, as the family estate is entailed to a distant male relative, Mr. Collins, and upon Mr. Bennet’s death, they will be left with little fortune.

The arrival of a wealthy bachelor, Mr. Bingley, to the neighbourhood sets the plot in motion. Mrs. Bennet is eager to introduce him to her daughters, hoping one of them will catch his eye. Mr. Bingley is accompanied by his two sisters and his close friend, Mr. Darcy, who is perceived as proud and aloof.

The chapter ends with the news that the Bennets are invited to a ball at the nearby Netherfield Park, where Mr. Bingley has taken residence. The prospect of meeting the new neighbour and the possibility of advantageous matches excite the Bennet girls, especially Mrs. Bennet, who sees the ball as a prime opportunity for her daughters to find suitable husbands.

The first chapter sets the stage for the themes of social status, marriage, and the dynamics between the characters that unfold throughout the rest of the novel.’
