Reason and Goals – Jim Rohn

Read Time 2 mins

We all do recovery and self improvement in different ways. Some like the group thing, some like the shouty clappy thing and I like the crackly fireside thing.

The romance of a crackling vinyl LP wobbling on the battered Dansette record player at one side of the armchair with the crackling and spitting fire coals under the chimney at the other side.

Well that’s the romantic memory I invented deep in my mind and I’m happy to stay with that for now. There was, however, nothing romantic or sexy and floral about my recovery I can tell you. Perfume wasn’t invented in the gutter.

But there is something endearing for me personally about the old voices of vinyl with warm messages of hope.

Maybe it’s because the old days feel like fictional days, and since most of my successes come from vivid daydreams planting a seed of hope to eventually grow into a joyous reality; I am reaching towards those fictional moments for comfort. Does that make sense? You’re as loony as I am if it does.

Nonetheless, many of these old school teachers have a fantastic way of expressing the direction we crave. The message as we know is simple enough, it’s only our inner selves which complicate it, but we all can find that light bulb ‘a-ha’ moment in different ways at different stages. Keep rummaging around until you find that style that grabs and settles you.

Jim Rohn (1930-2009) is one of those that I could relate to. An American entrepreneur, motivational speaker, and author. He was widely regarded as one of the most influential motivational speakers in the self-improvement industry. Rohn’s rags-to-riches story and his valuable insights on personal development, goal-setting, and success have inspired countless people around the world.

Born in Yakima, Washington, Rohn grew up on a farm and initially struggled financially. However, he later discovered the power of personal development and continuous learning. He worked for various companies and became a successful distributor for a direct sales company, which provided him with the financial stability to start his speaking career.

Rohn’s speeches and seminars focused on life skills, goal-setting, time management, and personal growth. His philosophy revolved around the idea that success in any area of life is achievable through the cultivation of good habits, discipline, and positive thinking. Some of his most famous quotes include “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with” and “Don’t wish it were easier; wish you were better.”

Throughout his career, he mentored several successful individuals, including Tony Robbins, who later became a renowned motivational speaker and author himself.

Jim Rohn’s legacy continues to influence the personal development industry, and his teachings are still popular today through his books, audio programs, and the impact he made on the lives of many people seeking personal and professional growth.

Of course the answer come from deep within and no one other being can lead us there unless we are very lucky. It takes a lot of rummaging.

But here’s a taster. It might work for you on some level too.
